Chapter 11
Of course I was in grave danger. Whoever this man was, he thought I was Wren, which told me that he didnât know her at all. It also told me that Strasserâs boss had made sure no stone would be unturned and hired multiple bounty hunters to find Wren. I was a good pass for her with someone who had only been given her description or hadnât seen her in over five years, but not to someone who knew Wren or had studied any kind of recent picture of her. This guy was definitely the former.
I thought through my options. The room was too small to try and make a run for it, and there was no way to get Ianâs attention. The size of the room also limited my ability to draw my gun. Once I did that, my mystery savior would draw his as well, and any gunfire would likely leave Mr. Booten, and possibly me, dead. However, my secondary thoughts laid out a plan that may get me into the lab to find Strasser. Carterâs team was watching, so they would know I was there. Well, theyâd know there was movement, and when Ian told them I had disappeared, they would put two and two together. With no other options, I went along with it.
âWhat do you mean Iâm in grave danger?â I played up the fear in my voice for added effect.
âThe people youâre with are not who you think they are. Your father sent me and my team to get you, but when we got to Oxford you were already gone. When we lost track of you, your father suggested you might come here.â
Wow. This guy was good. So they knew Wren had been picked up by Ianâs team, but it was clear this guy had no idea who we were, and absolutely no clue that I was really a member of that team. They also were clueless to the fact that Char had Wren. That meant Char hadnât checked in with Strasserâs boss yet. The question was, how did they know about the safe deposit box?
There was a commotion outside the room, distracting us all. I heard a loud voice say something in Dutch and then in English. Mr. Booten opened the door just enough to survey the situation. Behind him, Ian was having a verbal altercation with a bank employee at the end of the teller counter.
âNo,â he said condescendingly. âIt is imperative that I retrieve my friend!â
âSir, when she is done she will come back out. You are not permitted back there,â the woman said with a polite, yet commanding tone.
At that moment, Ian turned and caught my eye through the two-inch gap in the door. I shook my head infinitesimally and darted my eyes to the right to tell him that we were not alone. I had a feeling he already knew something was wrong. Maybe my pretend savior popped up on the facial recognition scan Claudia had been running. It took only seconds for Ian to throw everything into the fire and bum rush the door.
